We're The Founders of the Household Budgeter

As a husband and wife, we know the toll that finances can take on a marriage and family if they aren't in the right place. After our journey together of getting financially smart (and still learning) we decided that we not only wanted to share our story but also all the info to help you out too!

Meet Matthew

Husband of The Household Budgeter and to Jess, dad to this sweet little girl, and owner of a successful remodeling company. Some people hate the thought of reviewing numbers and managing budgets but when you major in entrepreneurship and finance (Go Catamounts, WCU), you can't help the thought of rejoicing when you see that $0 minimum payment due.

Hi, I'm Jess!

Wife of The Household Budgeter, mom to a little girl who is a spitting image of me! Some days that's good and bad...A dental hygienist by trade that fell in love with digital marketing and totally shifted my career, FROM HOME! This was the start of becoming debt free, not the thought, but actual traction.

We met in middle school...

Yes it's true. We did meet in middle school and we knew that somehow we would be married forever one day!

And..that's how the story goes, but the in between was a little less desirable. Once Matthew and I reunited we had FUN! We did what any couple would do, blow the money, buy expensive gifts, without a care in the world. Then things got serious. If you know anything about him you know he's a numbers guy and I was not...Not a guy, and NOT in love with numbers.

My heart almost sank when I told him how much credit card debit that I was in. That I had a shopping card for every store, and when he grimaced, I replied " But with the card you SAVE more." WRONG. I had racked up a TON of debt and plastic cards that were now useless.

After I made my confession, it was his time. He confessed that he was not where he wanted to be, was drowning in school loans, and it was time we took control over finances.

That is not fun. The thought of not shopping, or eating out, or having to check your bank account every two seconds.

After I graduated school I became a hygienist and thought I had hit a gold mine. WRONG AGAIN. I quickly found ways to dispose of money...you know how that is ladies. Fast forward. I was chairside seeing patients, which I loved, but the pay not so much. I hated the thought of asking my husband for money, and that I was hitting that glass ceiling knowing I would never be paid any more until after about 15 years of dental service. I absolutely could not make it that long.

Matthew told me, "If you can find a way to supplement your income, you can quit." It was as easy as that. That's when my journey in the online and digital marketing career started. While we needed to pay down credit cards, school loans, and vehicles, I needed to get out of that job worse. So we made minimum payments and I assured Matthew I could be successful. I mean come on, I damn sure wasn't going back! That's when I knew it was time to get ahold of the budget, save more, make more, and start living instead or working my life away!

Matthew graduated with honors with his Entrepreneurship and Finance degree. Made A's in doctrine level courses. Went to several jobs interviews who offered him salaries that would take YEARS to pay down the loans. He knew there was something better. So he went out to find a home to rent that he could afford and start his own company. This home was bug infested, the emergency heat was too costly to run, no AC, and the neighborhood...well I'll let you imagine what that was like.

But he made his way...own his own. Sacrificing the nice cars, the warm home, and the comfy corporate job.

Fast Forward:

We both talked about our pasts and finances, and were understanding. We knew it would take both of us trying really hard, working more, and becoming more financially conscious.

We did it. TOGETHER.

Ladies and gentlemen whether you are married, single, divorced, if you can shift your mindset and keep your eye on the prize you can be on the same journey. On the way to being debt free, planning for your future, provide for your family in ways that you never thought was possible.

You ask how we know? Because we were there. We are STILL there in some instances. Our story probably sounds a little fairy tale-ish, and it is somewhat.

That's why we created The Household Budgeter. To help families just like you love the life they live while still living on a budget, preparing themselves for retirement, and lifting that financial stress that has been holding you back!
